A minimum of 13 people lose their lives and 98 injured in train derailment in Mexico.

A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's flagship government projects.

The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.

“We will meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” stated the national leader.

The official announced that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The leader noted plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the former leader, whose presidency finished the prior year. This project was a hallmark of his government's developmental goals for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The development of both train projects was managed by the nation's military, marking a notable growth of its duties in public projects. They were built at an accelerated speed, beating forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.

However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously raised ongoing apprehensions over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an previous collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a primary political opposition demanded an prompt pause in the building and running of all such projects.

This stoppage was requested while awaiting a comprehensive safety audit. The party declared that the loss of life "requires swift accountability."

In response, the president insisted that the train had been functioning in complete compliance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the development and operation of these vital projects.
